Endemic to the San Juan and Atrato river basins in Colombia. The Emperor Tetra prefers slow moving waters of rivers, minor tributaries and backwaters.
Males tend to be more colourful, larger,and have extended dorsal, anal and caudal fins. The iris of the male is blue and the female is green.
One of the best fish for beginners and experienced fish keepers alike due to it being hardy and will readily take to most foods.
